I've always been interested in live steam engines for as long as I can remember. Going to shows around the area and seeing those tiny engines running that somebody built just got me very interested in the model steam engine hobby. I've never been able to do anything about it until now, some 30 years later. I finally have some small equipment that I can build some engines on.
A majority of the projects will be from Elmer Verburg's excellent book of steam engines he has built. The book is no longer available and is very expensive if one is found. As of 1/23/08 I have discovered that the book I paid $42.00 + $4.20 shipping now goes form any were around $250 to close to $500. So if you find one for under this price grab it. If you just can't afford that price and still would like to build one of Elmer's engines then you need to go to Elmer's_Engines_1 . It is a Yahoo base group. There they have some, but not all, of his engines in a zipped archive. You need to be a member of the group to download any plans.
So let us begin the adventure in model live steam engines of the stationary kind. This won't be a total how to do it series, but will show techniques I used to build the models. I will be using my Sherline lathe and mill attachment for most of the work.
